MAG

If you want to learn about multiple cultures, attending a MAG meeting is one place to start. MAG—which stands for Multicultural Awareness group, is about embracing and celebrating our cultural diversity all while bringing awareness about different cultures on campus. This semester during their meetings MAG has begun doing a series of presentations where students from different countries get a chance to share information about their country and culture.
MAG holds numerous events throughout the year. An annual event that they hold is their Multicultural Dinner which is typically held in the spring semester. During the event they have a fashion show showcasing the traditional outfits of different cultures, an expo with information representing all the countries from which the international students on campus are from and a dinner involving cuisines from around the world. This semester, however, they had a Diwali Night Event (Diwali being the festival of light). During the event they had Indian food along with Bollywood-themed music and performances. The event aimed to bring awareness about the Diwali festival and it’s importance and significance to different religions. The event ended with a prayer and the lighting of diyas (Earthen lamps).
Not only does the club hold events themselves but they have collaborated with other clubs on campus. This semester they have collaborated with LASO during Halloween week for the Day of the Dead, which was called “Day of the Dead Worldwide ''. MAG featured different countries such as the Philippines, Nepal, China, Mauritius, etc.. and how their ancestors are honored. They have also collaborated with GSA for a fireside chat on race-gender intersectionality where MAG talked about language barriers. Lastly, they collaborated with MSU for the cultural appropriation vs appreciation workshop. The club is currently planning future events to keep a lookout for.
