Black Student Union (BSU)
Staff Writer: Yesenia Sanchez
Black Student Union (BSU) is a well-known club on campus. Their mission statement is "we are striving to create a progressive, safe, and loving community for the Black population that promotes cultural diversity and enlightenment". BSU holds meetings bi-weekly where Black students and allies come together to have fun and discuss topics relevant to the global Black community. They strive to support all Black students on campus no matter their member status in the club. At the beginning of each meeting a global Black history fact is told to start off. The term "global" is used because BSU is trying to focus on the African Diaspora as a whole rather than just Black American culture.
BSU collaborates with a couple of clubs on campus such as Latino American Student Organization (LASO), Mu Sigma Upsilon (MSU), Multicultural Awareness Group (MAG), and Gender & Sexuality Alliance (GSA). Their events vary from a movie series to fireside chats. One of the president’s favorite memories was their BSU X MSU kickback where they played games, ate, and talked about controversial topics. It allowed everyone to discuss their point of views while they bonded with members of the community. During Black History Month they plan a month packed with events. Every year Black students and allies get together to take the "Black Out'' photo where everyone wears all black. They plan programming around educating the campus on Black history and culture and celebrating it.
